OVPN Transparency report February 2016

This is the monthly transparency report for February 2016. In the previous transparency report we stated that traffic statistics will be presented for each datacenter instead of for each single server. This was decided for the purpose of readability as a total of 24 servers are now operated by OVPN.


OVPN had one instance of downtime in February affecting the website and our DNS servers. The downtime lasted for 30 minutes and was caused by a power outage.


Summary


Our VPN servers had an overall uptime of 100 % during February. OVPN nearly broke the previous traffic record as a total of 767 TB was encrypted through our servers.


OVPN also officially expanded to the international market in February. Marketing towards the new markets has slowly been initiated during February. Among other things, we’ve created a Facebook page, a Twitter account and an Instagram account. We encourage you to like and follow these accounts in order to receive quick updates and news about OVPN.


It’s also worth mentioning that the servers in Frankfurt currently have American IP addresses. Thus, accessing American streaming services can be achieved by connecting to these servers.


Below you’ll find performance numbers and statistics for our datacenters in Stockholm, Malmö and Frankfurt.

Analysis


Our datacenter in Malmö has a maximum capacity of 10 Gbit/s. However, during February the traffic load amounted to a mere 476 Mbit/s on average.


The largest traffic spike recorded was 1150 Mbit/s, which represents 11,5% of the maximum capacity. The 95th percentile landed on 778 Mbit/s, meaning the traffic load was below 7,8% of the maximum capacity for 95% of the time.


In total 150 TB of traffic was encrypted and anonymized by the servers in Malmö.


The Malmö datacenter had an uptime of 100% during February.

Analysis


Our datacenter in Stockholm has a maximum capacity of 10 Gbit/s. However, during February the traffic load amounted to 1940 Mbit/s.


The largest traffic spike recorded was 3640 Mbit/s, which represents 36,4% of the maximum capacity. The 95th percentile landed on 2850 Mbit/s, meaning the traffic load was below 28,5% of the maximum capacity for 95% of the time.


In total 607 TB of traffic was encrypted and anonymized by the servers in Stockholm.


The Stockholm datacenter had an uptime of 100% during February.

Analysis


We deployed our servers in Frankfurt on the 31st of January meaning February is the first full month the servers have been running. The Frankfurt datacenter has a maximum capacity of 10 Gbit/s. However, the traffic load was a mere 33 Mbit/s on average in February.


The largest traffic spike recorded was 273 Mbit/s, which represents 2,7% of the maximum capacity. The 95th percentile landed on 87 Mbit/s, meaning the traffic load was below 1% of the maximum capacity for 95 % of the time.


As the servers in Frankfurt were recently deployed the traffic amount was significantly lower than for our other datacenters. In total a mere 10 TB of traffic was encrypted and anonymized in the Frankfurt datacenter.


Frankfurt had an uptime of 100% during February.


Website


WEB01 had an uptime of 99,93% during February resulting in a total downtime of 30 minutes.


Database


SQL01 had an uptime of 99,93% in February resulting in a downtime of 30 minutes.
