Desktop client v2.0.0: WireGuard support

David Wibergh, about Announcements

We have been working a long time for this, and we're absolutely thrilled to finally be able to release WireGuard in the desktop client.

A few notes:

- There is no support for Public IPv4 and Multihop when using WireGuard in this version of the desktop client. Public IPv4 with WireGuard in the desktop client will be integrated within the next few months.

- OpenVPN is still the default protocol. To use WireGuard, click the Cogs icon, and on the Protocol page, enable Connect using WireGuard.

- There have been some changes in the design, which will be improved further on.

List of changes in v2.0.0

  • New: WireGuard is included
  • New: added a Beta setting that allows users to participate in betas prior to stable release
  • Bug fix: localized city names for all languages
  • Bug fix: remove hard coded device limit of 4 in error messages
  • Improvement: updated OpenVPN to 2.5.5
  • Improvement: updated layout, but more improvements await
  • Improvement: increased stability

How can I update the desktop client?

  1. Launch client
  2. You will now see a notification pop up asking you if you wish to update to version 2.0.0
  3. Click Yes
  4. Wait for the installation to finish and enter your password if asked for it
  5. Windows users must accept the Wintun driver installation
  6. As soon as the installation finishes, the new version will launch automatically.

If for some reason the online update fails

If something goes wrong, simply close the desktop client and install it manually.
