What is VPN port forwarding?

Port forwarding is a networking technique that allows a computer or a network of computers to communicate with the outside world over the Internet. It involves redirecting specific communication requests from one address and port number combination to another.

Which ports are allowed and which are blocked are usually decided by a firewall, either on a computer, a router, or both. For security reasons, incoming packets are often filtered and discarded.

Using port forwarding, network administrators can configure which packets are allowed on a network, and where they should be sent to.

Benefits of VPN Port Forwarding

How does VPN port forwarding work?

When you call a company, a robotic voice may ask you to press various buttons so that your call is redirected to the right department person. Port forwarding works similarly. Packets are tagged with a number, which the router on a network then checks and tries to redirect to the correct device and service on a network.

If the packet does not match a preconfigured rule, the packet is discarded and is not sent anywhere on the network. If it does match a preconfigured rule, it is then redirected to the correct device on the network. The device can then choose to either respond to the packet (if a service has been configured to listen to the port), or the device can choose to ignore it.

All traffic sent over the Internet is tagged with a number, and can be blocked or redirected based on its number. When you visit a website, that traffic is often done over port 80 (for HTTP) or 443 (for HTTPS). If a network administrator wants to block web traffic, they could block those two ports.

What is VPN port forwarding used for?

A device can have multiple processes on it which communicate over the Internet. As an example, it might have a web server, a mail server, and a media server all running on the same server. When someone tries to reach that server, it needs to know which service you are trying to communicate with so that it can issue the correct response. And that is where port forwarding comes in. Every service on a computer communicate over specific ports. If it is unable to communicate over those ports, some of its features may not work properly.

Not all networks may support port forwarding, either for technical or security reasons. With most VPN, IP addresses are shared (behind NAT) and thus do not offer support for port forwarding.
